Abstract

This study investigates adolescence delinquency from the perspectives of counsellors, focusing on the psychosocial risk factors that contribute to delinquent behaviours. Fifteen licensed counsellors registered with the Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia (LKM), each with a minimum of two years’ experience working with delinquent adolescent client, participated in the study. Using a qualitative design, in-depth interviews were conducted to capture counsellors’ experiential insight. The study is timely and significant, as adolescent delinquency continues to present serious social and psychological challenges, with far-reaching implications for individuals, families, and communities. Counsellors’ perspectives are especially valuable, as they reflect direct engagement with delinquent adolescent and provide a unique understanding of the complex interplay of risk factors. Findings revealed that family dysfunction, peer influence, socioeconomic difficulties, community environment, exposure to technology and media, and individual attributes were frequently identified as contributing factors. By centring professional insights, the study offers a nuanced perspective on how psychosocial challenges intersect with adolescent development and delinquency. The implications extend to both counselling practice and rehabilitation strategies, underscoring the importance of integrated interventions that address not only behavioural outcomes but also underlying developmental and mental health concerns. This research advances knowledge by foregrounding counsellors’ voices, offering practice-based insights to strengthen prevention and rehabilitation efforts for at-risk adolescents.
